This summer siblings Markell (8) and Milee (13) attended Yes I Can Basketball Camp as recipients of the Mood Williams Camp Scholarship Fund. The week at camp was full of fun, laughter and gaining skills for both children. When a parent is diagnosed with breast cancer we know that it affects the entire family through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Markell and Milee’s mom, Danielle was diagnosed with Stage II PRER+ HER- breast cancer and was unable to work during her surgery and treatment. She reflected on diagnosis and the impact on her children, “My diagnosis of breast cancer had my children sad and worried. They have been my strength throughout this whole journey. I hope in the future they will know they can get through anything. I know I will be right by their side, just like they were for me.”

When reflecting on her family being nominated for the scholarship Danielle shared, “The Mood Williams Camp Scholarship was an amazing opportunity, without it I’m not sure they would have been able to go otherwise. I saw my son gain more confidence and my daughter fell in love with basketball during this week of camp. This was a great experience for my kids and I’m so appreciative.”

The kids shared, “It was amazing. We made new friends, and the camp wasn’t just for people who were good, but also beginners. It was great for kids who needed some extra help with basketball.”

We loved hearing what Milee would share about her mom. “If someone asked about my mom I’d say “she’s a fighter. She’s a fighter before she got cancer and before she was diagnosed. Now instead of a fighter she’s a battle general with scars.

Mood’s Fund

This summer we were able to support 33 children with summer camps or programming through our Mood Williams Camp Scholarship Fund. Giving these children a chance to smile, laugh and find joy during a difficult time. We are grateful for our 2025 sponsors Nucor Charitable Foundation and Myers Park Methodist Church’s Builders Class. If you’d like to help support Mood’s Fund you can donate here or reach out to Jessie Nash to learn more about the fund and opportunities to get connected.
