When Cheryl was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 22, 2022, her life changed. Rather than letting the diagnosis define her, Cheryl embraced healing and empowerment.
“Having a great support system definitely helped with my healing and mental well-being,” Cheryl recalls. Surrounded by the love and support of her family, friends, and Go Jen Go, Cheryl navigated the difficult emotions and challenges that came with her diagnosis. Today, at 45, she is a healthy two-year breast cancer survivor who is “healthy, feeling great and full of gratitude.”
Cheryl’s faith played a pivotal role in her journey. She said her relationship with God deepened, becoming a source of comfort and strength. A Bible verse, Exodus 14:14, became her mantra: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” She repeated this verse daily, especially before each treatment, guiding her through the darkest moments.
Cheryl’s sons, now six and eight, were a significant motivation for her resilience. “I had to be strong for my children,” she said. “They are my everything.” Her love for her children fueled her fight against the disease, helping her maintain a positive mindset.
“Cheryl’s faith, strength, and resilience in the face of cancer and while going through a tough divorce have been truly inspiring to me and others. Myself, your family, friends and your two loving children are so grateful to have you in our lives. The sun is shining brighter, the air feels fresher, and every day is a gift with her in it. She has faced every challenge with courage and determination. She has shown everyone what it means to live with purpose and to never give up, even when things seem impossible. You are more than just a survivor, a hero, a mother, a daughter, an aunt, a sister, and a shining example of hope and perseverance. I am truly honored to call you a dear friend for over 24 years.” -Dionne
In addition to her family, Cheryl found an invaluable source of support in the organization Go Jen Go. “Go Jen Go provided financial support, which alleviated some of the burden of paying my bills,” she explains. Their assistance went beyond the financial. In December 2022, Go Jen Go delivered Christmas gifts to Cheryl and her family, a gesture that left her “shocked and speechless.” Cheryl reflects on that moment, saying, “I see this act of kindness as God sending His earthly angels to bless us with the gifts. It was so personal because the gifts were hand-delivered to my home. Go Jen Go will forever remain in my heart, and it is my goal to one day give back.”
Cheryl appreciates the sense of community Go Jen Go fosters among survivors. “Their ongoing events for grantees provide a sense of community,” she shares. Cheryl looks forward to these events, where she has built friendships with other attendees who understand the challenges of battling breast cancer. The Day of Hope event stands out—a celebration of survivors and thrivers that left her feeling uplifted and valued. “It was extremely special to know that Go Jen Go cares deeply about cancer survivors and thrivers,” Cheryl says. The thoughtful, planned activities offered a refreshing and supportive environment where survivors could connect and heal together.
Cheryl’s experience with breast cancer has transformed her into a mentor, offering guidance and support to others who are navigating their own battles. “I strongly encourage others to be their own advocates,” she advises. “If something doesn’t feel right or a medical professional dismisses your concern, don’t stop until you get answers.” A reminder that it is crucial to trust yourself and seek the help you need.
For those currently fighting breast cancer, Cheryl offers encouragement: “Know that there’s always someone praying for you, and always do your best to have a positive attitude. It’s okay not to be okay, but don’t nurse it. Feel what you’re feeling and move on. Ask for help. Don’t ever let cancer define who you are. Live your best life and see yourself as the beautiful butterfly you are. Spread your wings and be free.”
Cheryl also expresses deep appreciation for the medical team at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute, her children who have been her inspiration, and her family and friends who have stood by her side. The unwavering support and prayers from the staff and faculty at United Faith Christian Academy also played a crucial role in her recovery. As she continues to thrive, Cheryl remains committed to giving back, mentoring others, and living a life full of hope, gratitude, and joy.
Cheryl’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of faith, community, and resilience in the face of life’s greatest challenges. Through her story, she inspires others to find strength in their darkest moments and to embrace the beauty and hope that life offers
